The Surgeon claims bronze in preparation to Beijing
Palmerston North athlete Greig ‘the surgeon’ Jackson has returned from the Australian National Boccia Championships with
a bronze medal and narrowly missed out on a second medal.
Jackson claimed is bronze medal in the BC3 Pairs competition after pairing up with a young New South Wales athlete -
whom he met days prior to the tournament.
As the only New Zealand player to qualify for the World Boccia Championships later this year in Beijing, Jackson has
been offered the chance to train with and compete against his Australian counterparts in Sydney as part of his
preparation. He has another training camp scheduled in August in his lead-up to the Champs.
Meanwhile in the Individuals BC3 competition, Jackson narrowly missed out on a medal after losing his semi-final match
2-4 to Australia’s Daniel Michel – who has also qualified for Beijing.
Bruce Bycroft, Greig’s on court ramp assistant said “although Greig is disappointed with the result, the competition in
Australia has been great and it has shown us that we still have some work to do before September”.
On top of his preparation, Jackson must help come up with a further $13000 to cover the entry fee and airfares for the
Beijing Champs having already raised around $5000 from donations and sponsorships. Boccia New Zealand receives a minimal
amount of funding which is enough to cover administration costs and the running of the organisation.
“We are a small charitable organisation and need the support of New Zealand to help Greig go for gold” Boccia New
