Wellington chef invited to compete on world stage
Allred’s Paella demonstration every Monday at Wellington restaurant Osteria del Toro
Wellington chef John Allred’s Paella is no flash in the pan, it’s so good in fact that he’s been invited to compete in an international Paella cooking competition.
Allred, from Wellington restaurant Osteria del Toro, is the only New Zealand representative joining 30 others from the Pacific to compete in the 1st
Spanish Paella Competition Oceania in Manly, Australia on Sunday 25 May.
The top three will then go on to Valencia, Spain. They will join other finalists from around the world in the 54th culinary to be acknowledged as the best Paella chef in the world.
Allred, who offers free Paella demonstrations every Monday at his restaurant, says it is honour to be invited and to represent New Zealand doing something he loves.
About Chef John Allred New Zealand born Allred ditched his text books for cook books, and in 1995 won the inaugural Huka Lodge Scholarship which was set up to provide a New Zealander international exposure.
He worked in kitchens such as Le Gavroche, London, England and training at the Ritz Hotel, Paris France.
Allred says, “ My experience in New Zealand and France over the last 15 years from Michelin starred restaurants in Paris to wood fired oven cookery at home has given me a diverse background which I use today at my restaurant Osteria del Toro.”
