Kiwi Musician’s Drum ’n Bass Playing Robots Go Viral
A video uploaded by New Zealand artist KinetiX featuring an array of robots playing drums and percussion together with a
set of analogue synthesizers has won international acclaim
Christchurch, New Zealand – May 14, 2014 – KinetiX (real name Jason Long) has found his most recent musical work entitled simply ’Robotic Drum Set and Analog Bass’
in the spotlight. It has gone viral, achieving over 100,000 views and has been covered by such esteemed international
news outlets as The Huffington Post and Vice in just the first few days following its release on the 6th of May.
The video, which can be found at https://vimeo.com/93923609 is a drum ’n bass piece performed live using an automated
drum kit and other percussion, playing together with a selection of rare vintage and new analogue synthesizers. All of
the sound is generated and synchronised in real time.
The piece has been described as ”gnarly” by London Elektricity, and as an ”incredible [...] futuristic music video
straight out of science fiction” by William Goodman of The Huffington Post. It is also being covered by several other
news outlets such as CreateDigitalMusic and Wired among others.

sales are going towards presenting and publishing a paper related to musical robotics research at the NIME 2014
conference in London.
