Board Art 2014 Marlborough has kicked off!
Board Art 2014 Marlborough is a Marlborough Youth Council initiative. The purpose of which is to provide opportunities for youth in Marlborough, utilising art as a medium to profile Marlborough youth in a positive way.
As Johnathan Cash, Youth Council member states, “The Marlborough youth council goal has always been to showcase youth, prove we are worthwhile and have great skills which can benefit the community, I believe this project is a great start and will certainly highlight the artistic talent of youth here in Marlborough. I’m very happy to be part of the Marlborough District Youth Council who is promoting this fantastic event. I can’t wait to see the final result and see the boards all around our community!"
The process is simple. Youth register their interest by going to our Facebook page and following the link to our online application form, or by picking up a flyer from the Millennium Art Gallery or the Marlborough District Library.
We then send out an A3 paper template of the paper deck to design. The ‘Sky’s the Limit’ in terms of the materials used and the profile of the board, as the designer can keep it flush to the board or 3D their design. Different types of textures can also be used; knit, crochet, Lego, recycled egg boxes… the list goes on. This doesn’t have to be a functional board by any means as this is ‘art for art’s sake’.
Submissions close on Friday 27th June 2014. The A3 templates need to be handed in by 5pm to the Gallery or library on this date.
Between 28th June – 3 rd July, the selection panel, including young people, will judge which of the paper designs will progress to feature in the exhibition.
On 4 th July, those artists selected by the panel will get their ply decks to replicate their design on the actual decks.
On 22nd August, the completed ply board designs are to be handed in to the Millennium Art Gallery, Seymour Square, Blenheim.
On 20th September – 12th October the Board Art 2014 Marlborough youth art exhibition will open. These art works will not just be hung up in the gallery; they will be displayed in various locations around the CBD.
