Now in its fifth year, the MAGGI Kitchen Showdown is back and the call is out to all intermediate students across the country to register a team of four and get in the kitchen to start cooking up a storm.
The intermediate school cooking competition provides an excellent opportunity for budding chefs to shine in the kitchen and learn all about cooking delicious, nutritious and affordable meals.
The regional finals (Upper North Island, Lower North Island and South Island) and national final will be screening on the brand new The 4.30 Show on TV2 later this year, giving kids the opportunity to become celebrity chefs for a day.
Richard Brogan from the MAGGI Kitchen and competition judge says the competition is a really fun way to get the next generation of home cooks in the kitchen and interested in cooking.
“Every year gets harder and harder to judge. The standard of cooking talent is amazing and kids come up with more creative meals and ways of cooking. I’m really excited to see what meal creations the teams come up with this year!” says Richard.
Last year, the Upper North Island team from Springbank School in Kerikeri took out the top prize of $5,000 for their school, with Plimmerton School from Wellington and Outram School in Otago taking up the runner-up spots and winning their schools $1,000 respectively.
Each team much create their very own recipe, with a few key requirements. The meal must:
- be a main course meal and be able to serve a family of 4 people (2 adults+2 children)
- cost a maximum of $20 to make
- include the use of one MAGGI product
- be able to be made and plated up in 50mins (but not quicker than 40mins)
About MAGGI Kitchen Showdown
Entries for the fifth annual MAGGI Kitchen Showdown are now open, with entries closing 4 July 2014. Judges will then select 36 regional finalists, and regional finals for the Upper North Island, Lower North Island and the South Island will take place in September and screen on The 4.30 Show on TV2, as well as the national final.
Teams will be challenged to learn more about cooking and nutrition as they compete to make a well balanced meal suitable for a family of four. Teams will be judged on a variety of components, from nutritional value to team work, to taste and technique and will have the chance to win the grand prize of $5000 for their school, or one of two runner up prizes of $1000.
