Adventurer wins $7200 to complete global challenge
Takanini mountaineer and secondary school teacher, Dave Williams has received the lion’s share of a $25,000 cash prize that will enable him to complete his Sea2Summit7 challenge and achieve his goal of raising $100,000 for male mental health.
The prize is part of Yealands Family Wines’ ‘Raise a Glass to Success’ campaign, which recognises and celebrates everyday Kiwis doing excellent things and challenges them to reach their next level of success.
Mr Williams mobilised social media networks and his supporter base to achieve 28.5% of the voting and a cash prize of $7139. He will use the prize money to return to climb Mt Elbrus in Russia, Europe’s biggest summit.
“I am stoked to win this prize and even prouder to be the first recipient of the Yealands Raise a Glass to Success campaign” says Williams. “All of the finalists are doing amazing things to improve their communities and it is humbling to be in such great company.”
Founder and Owner of Yealands Family Wines, Peter Yealands, is pleased with the results of the Raise a Glass initiative. “We created this campaign to celebrate success and to encourage others to follow their dreams” he says. “We have had an exceptional response to this campaign in its first year and are delighted that New Zealanders have got behind these everyday heroes. While Dave is our overall winner we are pleased that we have been able to help our other finalists get a bit closer to their next goals also”.
The other five contestants were awarded a share of the $25,000 prize in order of their share of public votes. Mt Roskill’s Jason Holdaway from FRANK Stationery receives $5000 . South Island finalists Jade Temepara of Hand Over A Hundy and Juliet Arnott of Rekindle receive $4200 and $3400 respectively. Ponsonby woman Elena Keith of Hear for You was awarded $2900, and Wellington singer songwriter Iva Lamkum gets $2300 towards producing her next album.
