Sport Wellington has been recognised at the annual New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards held on Monday night in Christchurch. Organised by Sport NZ, the awards are held each year as part of the Sport Connections Conference and look to recognise outstanding achievement across the sport and recreation sector.
Nominated in four separate categories, Sport Wellington took out the award for Communications Excellence for their work on the 2013 AMI Round the Bays. After selling out in 2012, Sport Wellington set their sights on an increased capacity for the 2013 event and developed a comprehensive multi-channel communications strategy. Sport Wellington not only executed a thorough and effective communications plan, they attracted a record number of participants and reached the events capacity well ahead of schedule.
Chief Executive of Sport Wellington Phil Gibbons says the team are ecstatic with their win, “Our entire team put in an extraordinary amount of effort into AMI Round the Bays and it’s really great to see that the hard work has been recognised by the sporting community. It was a fantastic night and a special thanks goes to Sport New Zealand for hosting the evening. I would also add my congratulations to the other winners on the night and especially those in the other three categories we were a finalist in.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that Sport Wellington had become the first Regional Sports Trust to be nominated in four out of the six separate categories in one year. Those categories included:
Event Excellence – AMI Wellington Round the Bays
Community Impact – Masterton Tennis Centre Rejuvenation Project
Innovation Excellence – Sport Wellington 2014 – 2020 Strategic Plan
Communication Excellence – AMI Wellington Round the Bays
“With a high calibre of finalists, including Audi NZ Winter Games, New Zealand Golf and New Zealand
Cricket, Sport Wellington is proud to be recognised nationally for the work we are doing in the community” Gibbons added.
Sport Wellington’s own sports awards, The Dominion Post Sportsperson of the Year awards are being held on the 12th of June at the TSB Arena.
