Beginner coaches learn the basics at Sport Wellington workshop
Beginner coaches are being taught the ins and outs of coaching at the KiwiSport ‘Getting Started in Coaching’ workshop organised by local Regional Sports Trust, Sport Wellington. The entry level workshops aim to provide support to new or contemplative coaches, whether it be parents, teachers, students or volunteers.
The programme is designed to increase the skills and confidence of new coaches to deliver quality coaching experiences for school aged children. It aims to teach basic introductory coaching concepts while providing insight into what coaching is and how to effectively coach at this level.
Sport Wellington Performance Hub Senior Advisor, Mark Watson, says they have experienced an extremely positive response to the programme. “The courses are not sport specific and I think that has helped in appealing to coaches across a wide variety of sports, the focus is on building coach confidence rather than sport specific skills. Everything from planning, communication, motivating athletes and how to teach a skill is covered and delivered in an interactive way.”
Other topics covered include behaviour management, understanding the athlete, group dynamics, coaching styles and leadership, all taught by experts in their chosen sport. Upcoming facilitators include Cricket Wellington Coaching Director and former Wellington Blaze coach Mark Borthwick.
Workshops are free of charge and are set to run frequently region wide, throughout the year. Visit www.sportwellington.org.nz to find out more.
