Museum delighted by success of RISE
It was predicted to be one of the most controversial exhibitions ever held but RISE at Canterbury Museum has beaten all the odds and finished with an mighty ‘thumbs-up’ from Cantabrians.
RISE closed at the Museum on Sunday 23 March with a record 248,513 visitors through the exhibition since December last year.
This astounding result has made history. RISE was the most popular exhibition ever held at the Museum, an accomplishment that would not have been achieved without
widespread support from the community.
From a world leaders conference in London, Museum Director Anthony Wright said the exhibition had given the Museum an
opportunity to demonstrate how it can portray somewhat controversial topics in a vibrant yet thought-provoking way. As
well as its historical natural and human history displays, the Museum could present a high-profile aspect of popular
culture as part of New Zealand’s living history.
“RISE, looking at the evolution of graffiti into street art, was a risk for us. We’ve never presented anything quite like it before. It’s been a resounding success and we’re
extremely grateful to have received so much support from both the artists and our visiting communities - 248,513 people
through the show is testament to this!”
