Weather not an issue for keen cyclists at Bike the Trail 2014
More than 400 people turned out for Sunday’s annual Bike the Trail event, despite the predicted high winds and rain forecast.
Upper Hutt, 17 March 2014 - The Upper Hutt, Hutt City, and Greater Wellington Regional Councils Bike the Trail event was held on Sunday 16 March. Despite the weather forecast looking grim, more than 400 riders completed the 25 kilometre cycle from Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone or the 12 kilometre cycle from County Lane, Silverstream.
“At 9.30 am we were a little concerned that the weather had put people off, but as the sun came out, more families and individuals gathered and took on the challenge of cycling the Hutt river trail,” said Upper Hutt’s Activation Team Leader, Frances McEwen. “We had approximately 400 riders cross the line and were really pleased with this result, considering the severe weather warnings.”
Those who did complete the event were rewarded with random sport prizes at the Harcourt Park finish line, an inflatable gladiator game for children, coffee, a BBQ provided by the Hutt Valley Thunderbolts BMX club, music, and a magic show.
“All things considered, it was a great event. People really enjoyed relaxing in the lovely grounds at Harcourt Park after the ride. We received lots of feedback from the community regarding the ‘reverse’ start line, some loved it and others lamented having to cycle into the wind. We will be conducting an online survey with those who participated to seek more views in preparation for next year” says Ms McEwen.
Bike the Trail was the penultimate big summer event for Activation’s Parks and Places programme. This weekend will see the final event ‘The Amazing Race – Family Edition’. For more information go to www.parksandplaces.org.nz
