New Compositions: Tusalava
An exciting and free cultural, musical and cinematic experience is coming to Māngere Arts Centre - Ngā Tohu o Uenuku.
The council run centre is proud to screen Len Lye’s 1929 film ‘Tusalava’ accompanied by three new soundtrack
compositions by Pasifika composers Matatumua Opeloge Ah Sam, Matthew Faiumu Salapu (Anonymouz) and Poulima Salima. (The
original soundtrack for ‘Tusalava’ was written for two pianos by Australian Jack Ellit but it has since been lost.)
James Pinker, co-curator of ‘Len Lye: Agiagiā’ says, “These compositions bring together the impressive skills of three
contemporary Sāmoan composers, responding to the landmark animation of one of our great artists.”
Lye created 7,000 drawings, inspired by Māori, Aboriginal and Sāmoan art, which he then photographed to create this stop
animation.
