Table Tennis Attracts Most Nations to a Championship in New Zealand
A total of 1,900 participants and supporters from 59 nations have confirmed their interest in attending the STAG World
Veteran Table Tennis Championships to be held at Trusts Arena, Henderson from 12 - 16th May 2014. Entries close on 15th
March and it is expected that further entries will be received by that date.
Despite being geographically distant from many leading Table Tennis nations, the event, which is held every two years,
has proved popular with the largest contingents coming from India, Japan, China, Germany and Australia with smaller
teams coming from countries as diverse as Ukraine, Colombia, Mongolia and Iran.
“There will be over 6,000 matches played during the week, In what we believe could be the largest international sporting
event by nationality ever seen in New Zealand, surpassing even the 1990 Commonwealth Games where 55 nations attended”
said Table Tennis NZ Director Mr Paul Kyle. A number of past open world champions will head a highly competitive field
which includes Peter Karlsson, of Sweden and Jiang Jia Liang from China.
The Championship will attract an estimated 2,300 to 2,500 visitors to Auckland who will not only enjoy their sport but
will also enjoy the delights and attractions of Auckland.
The 17th World Table Tennis Veteran Championship is supported by Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development
(ATEED) and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise (MBIE). Following the event a number of the top quality
tables provided as part of the Stag International of India sponsorship will be donated to clubs across New Zealand to
provide for further development of an increasingly popular sport.
