Conroy Takes Aim At Championship
Invercargill driver Jamie Conroy heads to Taupo Motorsport Park for the final round of the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship this weekend with a 97 point lead in the series.
Conroy has had a remarkable run in his rookie season in the championship, winning thirteen of the fifteen races and four of the five rounds held to date. Engine problems hampered his Mygale during Round 4 at Hampton Downs in North Waikato costing him the opportunity of a clean sweep.
The second half of the series has taken place at North Island circuits, none of which Conroy had encountered before, but he has adapted very quickly. Prior to the penultimate round at Manfeild last month Conroy managed a short test session on the 3.5 kilometre Taupo circuit. "You have to attack the corners and throw the car around a lot to get the best out of it there. It is very different to Manfeild but I shouldn't have a problem changing back to that approach," said Conroy as he discussed the circuit earlier this week.
With a small buffer in the championship points Jamie say's, his main focus will be on "finishing races this weekend". "If I have the pace to be out front that will be good. I just need to stay out of trouble."
Jamie is also at pains to point out that it has been a team effort to arrive at the finale with the points lead. "I have to thank the whole team for getting me this far", he says.
As a new driver to the circuit Conroy will take part in a short test session on Friday afternoon. Another test session follows on Saturday morning with a twenty minute qualifying session scheduled for 11.45am. The first race of the final round over 10 laps takes place at 3.05pm on Saturday afternoon. Two races follow on Sunday, the first over 10 laps at 10.25am and the last of the season over 12 laps at 1.40pm.
Jamie Conroy's Formula Ford campaign is supported by Horgan Farms, Evolution Motorsport, Progressive Engineering Southland Ltd, Waikato Milking Systems, Gulf, John Deere, Gallagher, SP Tools, Hydraulink, George Wilson Sales Ltd, Sievwright Auto, PPG, E Hayes, Southern Wide Real Estate, Radcliffe Electrical and R & A Williams.
