Emerging Light Gallery, a boutique Plimmerton gallery which recently held its third exhibition, is proving to be a boon
for local and emerging artists.
The recent exhibition was opened by the Mayor of Porirua, Nick Leggett, who praised the new gallery, which opened last
November. “Emerging Light is a great reflection of Porirua as a creative city, and an example of local business
supporting and promoting the arts whilst also selling the story of where we live. Emerging Light Gallery is supporting
the city and Porirua City supports Emerging Light”.
The gallery is in the Remax Building next to the Plimmerton train station, and shares space with architectural
consultant compa ny Ak-tiv Architecture Ltd.
Gallery owner Michael Bennington’s vision for the gallery is to become a shared profit organisation which actively
involves the emerging artists while at the same time sustaining the gallery. Bennington is hoping to secure additional
funding for the gallery via the Arts Foundation fundraising site Boosted.org.nz
This would allow exhibiting artists to freely display their works without a large initial outlay.
The gallery’s current exhibition Contrasts showcases works by Kim Greig (New Plymouth), Meryth Dobbie (Paraparaumu), Angelique Monaghan (Raumati), Joanne Thomas
(Wellington), Nadine Clement (Wellington), Paula Dixon (Wellington), Adele Q (Pukerua Bay) and Natalie Floyd
(Plimmerton).
The exhibition’s focus is on monochromatic, black and white and two colour works, and includes media such as
lithography, pottery, ink and mixed media. The exhibition runs until the end of February and the gallery will be open
most days.
The gallery will feature a new exhibition each month.
