“In Flagrante is a sexy, thought-provoking, sensual experience and I can't wait to see where they go from here”
Frodo McDaniel - Broadway Baby (UK)
A real hit at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2013,’spotted' there for an exclusive one-off private performance in The Seychelles in November, and now booked for an Otago and Southland Tour in March 2014, aptly named NZ based In Flagrante (Latin: "in blazing" and once grounds for divorce)sets fire to your seat and offends your sensibilities – in the best manner possible.
Bridled, saddled, and ready to pounce, the women fromIn Flagrante quickly set the stage for an evening of skin and sass. This isn’t your grandpa’s burlesque.In Flagrante’s athletic cast turns the tradition on its head with a hilarious, contemporary take on female sexual stereotypes. And heads turn when these ladies flaunt their leather bridles, marching gear, and traffic girl uniforms.
A scintillating series of Pop Art vignettes with a voluptuous vicious edge,In Flagrante delivers a performance blending contemporary dance, avant-garde cabaret, urban iconology, and their own brand of fetish burlesque – in short, a fearless night of pure theatre.
In Flagrante is the audacious creation of Auckland-based legendary (Limbs Dance Company) choreographer MaryJane O'Reilly. “My dancers and I are so looking forward to touring Southland and Otago. Shanelle Lenehan, Maria Munkowits, Sofia McIntyre, Molly McDowall and 6 ft tall Georgie Goater are beautiful and brazen and perform In Flagrante with outrageous panache and bravado!”
With a rich, borderless movement vocabulary to draw from and the cryptic satiric eye of the contemporary dance choreographer, O’Reilly weaves tango influences with touches of classical ballet, slapstick with cabaret, jazz dance moves with standup comedy.In Flagrante embraces this eclecticism in fascinating and, at times, wickedly funny ways.
The Dominion Post's Greer Robertson puts it perfectly;
“If you're a contemporary dance fan, you'll adore the captivating choreography and precise physical and cerebral execution. Be prepared to be surprised if not a little shocked. If you're not a dance fan, you'll love the gorgeous sculpted dancers, the humour, music and daring minimal costumes, in all its slick, naked darkness and glory.”
In Flagrante's March 2014 Otago and Southland tour takes in Oamaru, Wanaka, Invercargill, Gore and finishes in Dunedin at the Dunedin Fringe Festival (see tour schedule below).
There will beIn Flagrante dance workshops taught inOamaruandWanaka.
