Five land a share of TAB's first Million Dollar Triple Trio

19 January

In the inaugural TAB Triple Trio at Trentham yesterday five winners had the first three horses home in each of the three Triple Trio races and won a share of the TAB’s $1 million prize pool.

Two of the tickets were ‘Pick Your Own’ – one sold over the Internet and the other through the Manukau City TAB. The other three were all ‘Triple Trio Easybets’, selected by the TAB's computer – one sold through the Clive TAB, one from the Plains Hotel Edgecombe and one over the TAB's Touchtone phone betting service.

The Internet bet was for 5% and so won $50,000. The Manukau City bet was for 9% and so won $90,000.

The bet placed at the Clive TAB was a $10 Easybet and picked up $100,000 from its 10% share. The Plains Hotel bet was a $15 Easybet and grabbed $160,000 through a 16% share. The happiest surprise of the day was for the Touchtone customer – their $10 Easybet was a 10% ticket, but after the late scratching of one of their runners in the final race, two more 10% shares transferred on to the winning substitutes netting a total windfall of $300,000.

TAB Executive General Manager Glenn Patrick said the organisation was delighted with TAB Triple Trio’s debut weekend.

“Having five winners shows that there is a real chance for punters to cash-in big on Triple Trio.

“The fact that three of the five winning selections were generated by the TAB computer means the system is working well and will give people confidence that they don’t need to be a racing expert to share in the excitement and give themselves a chance to land the big one.

“Product innovation is a key part of our corporate strategy so launching Triple Trio is a significant milestone for us,” said Mr Patrick.

The two 'Pick Your Own' bets were remarkably similar. Both winners elected to take one Banker with a group of other picks in each Triple Trio race. The internet bettor selected race winner Abidewithme as their Banker in the opening leg, whilst the Manukau City ticket relied upon runner-up Arietta. Both tickets used Natuzzi and Costume as Bankers in the final two legs.

Interestingly, a $20 'Win-the-lot' 100% Easybet ticket sold through the TAB at the Empire Stratford was still live going into the final race. They did have race winner Costume running for them but missed second and third. They still won over $15,000 for picking the first two Triple Trio races correctly.

Another $1 million goes on the line at next Saturday's Wellington Cup meeting at Trentham, with Triple Trio betting available from Thursday morning.
