Te Kapua Haira - Lotto Sport Makers Volunteer Recognition
Te Kapua Haira has recently been recognised by Sport Wellington for his volunteer contribution to the Wairarapa community.
This recognition is part of the ‘Thank a Sport Maker’ campaign; a partnership with the Lotto Volunteer Foundation and Sport New Zealand that will see the greater Wellington region sharing in over $1 million of quality clothing and sports gear to be awarded to Sport Makers throughout New Zealand over the next three years.
Sport Wellington recognises that sport volunteers (or ‘Sport Makers’) are the lifeblood of New Zealand sport and over 750,000 Sport Makers give 50 million hours of their time annually to keep our world class sport system humming. “It’s important to acknowledge the contribution of Sport Makers and this partnership with Lotto New Zealand helps us recognise our wonderful Sport Makers throughout New Zealand communities,” says Sport Wellington Wairarapa Regional Development Manager Dayle Clarkson.
At only 16 years of age Makoura College student Te Kapua Haira is already a well-respected volunteer umpire and his string of accolades are a testament to his commitment to his chosen sport netball. Recently Te Kapua was named the recipient of the Contribution to Sport award for both the Wairarapa Secondary School Sports Awards and the Wairarapa Maori Sports Awards. He has been acknowledged by the netball umpiring fraternity as having a great rapport with the players and good knowledge of the game seeing him chosen on numerous occasions to umpire representative and club finals and named as the umpire of the tournament.
Sport Wellington congratulates Te Kapua on his work in the community and through the investment from the Lotto Volunteer Foundation and Sport New Zealand is providing him, his college and his netball club with $500 each worth of ‘Sport Makers’ sporting goods.
People can show their appreciation for the Sport Makers who blow a whistle, coach, balance the books or help cook the sausages for the fundraising BBQ, by sending a thank you e-card available at lottovolunteers.co.nz.
Every nomination is in the draw to win a $500 merchandise voucher.
