Aspiring Authors Challenged to Write 50,000 Words in a Month

Aspiring Authors Challenged to Write 50,000 Words in a Month

Dunedin (Friday, 25 October 2013) – The Dunedin City Library will play host to budding writers during November, offering a free space to create that first draft of a novel.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a worldwide programme, now in its 15th year. It helps writers get on with the business of writing by offering free resources and support through its website, www.nanowrimo.org, Twitter feed and local workshops.

Internationally, there were 341,375 participating writers in 2012, who wrote a total of 3,288,976,325 words, with 38,438 people worldwide reaching the goal of 50,000 words. In Otago and Southland there were 63 participating writers, writing a total of 1,761,716 words and donating $235 to NaNoWriMo.

Otago-Southland NaNoWriMo has been active for four years and has grown to 330 members. New Zealand was the 11th most active country in the world in 2012, with 37,132 New Zealanders visiting the NaNoWriMo website.

Dunedin Public Libraries will be supporting the 2013 initiative by hosting the Come Write In programme, challenging writers to come together in a literary space, filled with resources conducive to the intensive creativity that NaNoWriMo inspires. Every Thursday in November, writers are encouraged to attend the free group workshops from 3-6pm on the fourth floor of the City Library.

The Dunedin liaison for NaNoWriMo will host a ‘kick-off party’ for participants at Café D’Or at 3.30pm on 30 October, where people can meet others and get a head start on their novel before the first workshop at the Library.
