$300 short film could get an Oscar nod

Directed by Allan George and Greg Stubbings (from Seven Sharp and formally The Crowd Goes Wild fame), the film was originally produced for the inaugral Tropfest, New Zealand, the world's largest short film festival.
It made the top 16 and was screened in front of a live audience of 8,000 people at the famous TSB Bowl of Brooklands in
New Plymouth in January. It went on to win 2 of the 4 awards ('Best Actor' and 'Best Maori Director'), and it has now
officially been selected for the 20th Austin Film Festival, and the 14th ImagineNative Film and Media Arts Festival in Toronto, Canada.
What started as a seed of an idea in Allan George's mind, was then developed into a screenplay by Greg Stubbings, and
produced by Sideways Productions with only a few weeks to spare before the Tropfest submission deadline; and by pulling
together some actor friends and favours, the film was made for less than $300.
The Festivals
Austin Film Festival (October 24-31) is an Academy Award-accredited festival, and one of the top festivals on the
American film festival circuit; with past guests and participants including the Coen Brothers (Fargo), Lawrence Kasdan (Star Wars), Oliver Stone (JFK), and Robert Rodriguez (Desperado), among other industry heavyweights.
SOUNDS PERFECT is the only Kiwi short film playing this year, alongside premieres of a number of feature films, and
special presentations by Oscar-winning director, Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs), and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.
ImagineNative Film and Media Arts Festival (October 16-20) has a growing reputation and celebrates the best that
Canadian and international indigenous filmmakers have to offer. SOUNDS PERFECT is one of a number of Kiwi films to be
selected, and Allan George has been fortunate enough to be one of the two New Zealand filmmakers to be granted short
film travel funding from the New Zealand Film Commission to be able to attend.
The Film
It focuses on Dave Dobson, a self-proclaimed “audio enhancement engineer” in the adult film industry, who strives to do
the best job possible, in an industry where standards don't matter.
It has previously aired on the Rialto Channel here in New Zealand, and will be airing on SBS 2 in Australia next month as part of their Tropfest TV series, which showcases the best Tropfest films from around the
world.
