2013 Whitireia Blues Express
Following in the footsteps of the 2012 ‘Up Front’ with Barnaby Weir show, the 2013 Whitireia Faculty of Arts Music
degree students will have three amazing musicians to assist them in their ‘Blues Express’ Thomas Oliver, Lisa Tomlins
and John O’Connor will be performing with them this year at one epic show at The James Cabaret on Friday 20 September.
Whitireia provides students with some of the best practical musical experiences. Previous students from the music degree
programme have worked with Warren Maxwell (Little Bushman, Trinity Roots), Karl Steven (Supergroove, Drab Doo Riffs) and
Barnaby Weir (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties) for their ‘Up Front’ gig.
2013 draws on talent from Wellington’s own:
Thomas Oliver – The front man of The Thomas Oliver Band. They have supported the likes of Fat Freddy’s Drop, Joe Cocker
and Cold Chisel.
Lisa Tomlins – The go-to vocalist we all hear and love. She has worked with some of Aotearoa’s top musicians in Rhombus,
EBB, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots, Little Bushman just to name a few.
John O’Connor – One of New Zealand’s most respected blues guitarist, John has worked with some amazing artists such as
BB King, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and that is just the icing.
In line with previous years these amazing artists will be co-producing with Whitireia music tutors who themselves are
respected artists within the music industry. They include George Packard (Elena, Hot Cafe, Chamber Music NZ), Mitch
Watston, Andy Mauafua (Bella Kalolo, Iva Lamkum, Aaradhna), Jim Perkins (David Grace, The Geof Culverwell trio, Andrew
Tosh) and Phil Hornblow of Vision Studios. The concert is also supported by the Whitireia Live Sound Music and Event
Production programme led by sound engineer, Spencer Fairhurst.
This year will include 36 students from the Whitireia music degree programme. Come and support the next generation of
Aotearoa’s professional musicians and be treated to an amazing night of blues and soul to tantalise your ears.
