Christchurch have been crowned New Zealand Age Group U17 Champions for 2013 defeating Auckland 1 in a tense and
thrilling final in Hastings.
The Mainland Netball Zone team were unbeaten throughout the week and came into the final as equal favourites alongside
opposition team Auckland 1 who also swept through the tournament with a 100 per cent winning record.
Christchurch earlier beat Wanganui in a tight contest, the match going goal for goal throughout. A few crucial turnovers
went the way of the Mainlanders in the final quarter to edge ahead by two on the final whistle 37-35. In the day’s
second Semi-Final, Auckland 1 was pitted against Auckland 2 with Auckland 1 clear winners in that contest 44-16.
The scene was set for a north versus south final and as expected all 14 girls left everything out on the court. With the
Anna Rowberry Cup up for grabs, the match started with intensity and didn’t let up for the full 40 minutes. Neither side
gave an inch with most centre pass ball making it into the hands of the shooters. Defensive midcourt pressure only
delayed the passage of ball into the shooting circle, with both sides prepared to be patient and move the ball around
for the right pass.
Christchurch edged in front in the third quarter to take a four goal lead into the final stanza, and with the match
slipping out of their grasp, Auckland 1 stalled while Christchurch held their composure to record the 37-31 win.
Christchurch captain Anteisha O’Connell was gracious in victory giving credit to her talented team and coaching staff.
EasiYo Tactix assistant coach Julie Seymour says the win is great to netball in the Mainland region.
“It’s been a wee while since a Christchurch team made the final and it’s been good to see the coaching staff giving
their whole squad a run during the week of games.”
“That gave her options in the final,” Seymour said.
“It’s exciting to see the level of emerging talent from the Mainland region and that’s great for the future.”
Three players from the Christchurch team made the U17 tournament selection, Charlotte Elley, Hayley Lee and Jess Prosser
while Auckland 1’s Holly Fowler, Chiara Semple and Maia Wilson gained recognition also.
In the battle for 3rd spot, Auckland 2 defeated Wanganui in a match which went down to the wire.
Wanganui were the surprise package of the tournament and their story is quite remarkable with only 14 girl’s trialling
for the representative team in which 12 were selected for the Wanganui U17 squad. Just 12 months ago, Wanganui finished
the tournament in 17th spot.
It was a superb showing from the Northern Zone team, Auckland 2 delighted with their 3rd placing among the 33 teams.
