Volunteers – thank you for your smile
They show up when we need them, with a smile on their face, ready to jump in and do whatever it takes.
As we celebrate International Volunteer Week this week, council acknowledges and thanks the volunteers across Auckland for their dedicated contribution to a wide variety of council projects.
There are dozens of volunteer groups and individuals across Auckland providing support for their local communities and one example is the Pacific Wardens. The Pacific Wardens conduct community safety patrolling in their local areas, acting as eyes and ears for the police and focusing on crime hot spots and anti-social behaviour areas.
“We acknowledge the valuable contribution of the Pacific Wardens,” says Councillor George Wood, chairperson of Auckland Council’s Community Safety Forum.
“Through community funding we have been able to provide some fantastic new gear for each warden, giving them greater public visibility during their patrols.”
Bryan Cartelle, Auckland Council Principal Rural Fire Officer, says another example of volunteers who make a difference are the volunteer Rural Fire officers who help fight fires and attend emergencies in our region’s rural communities.
“In recent summer months, and during the region wide fire ban, council managed multiple fires across the region, including large fires in the Dome Valley, Tapora and on Great Barrier Island,” says Mr Cartelle.
“We are immensely grateful for the volunteers’ dedication to their duties. We could not have done it without them,” he says.
Auckland Council provides many different volunteering opportunities. As well as those mentioned above, people can help with tree planting, contribute to animal welfare, work in our region’s libraries and act as camp hosts. If you are keen to volunteer, please contact Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.
