Manurewa students represent Auckland on the world stage
Six Manurewa students selected to represent Auckland at the annual Asia-Pacific Children’s Convention School in Japan
will receive a special farewell from Mayor Len Brown next week (Monday 10 June).
The mayor will join the six Greenmeadows Intermediate School junior ambassadors and their fellow classmates at a special
school assembly to congratulate the students and to wish them farewell.
The Year 7 students will join students from 33 countries at the convention held in Fukuoka, Japan from 12 to 24 July.
The convention aims to build an understanding of different cultures and traditions and improve participants’ leadership
skills. Attendees will participate in a home-stay experience, various Japanese cultural activities and school visits.
Auckland Council has a sister city partnership with Fukuoka and manages the annual Asia-Pacific Children’s Convention
School initiative in New Zealand.
“Auckland is increasingly a globally connected city, and an important part of this are our partner cities around the
world. This is an awesome opportunity for young Aucklanders to connect with their peers from all over the world and
learn about different cultures and perspectives,” says the mayor. “We are grateful to our partner city of Fukuoka in
Japan for affording this great opportunity to Auckland’s young people”.
This year is the convention’s 25th anniversary and over the past 25 years, 250 young Aucklanders have attended the
convention.
“We thank Auckland Council for this great opportunity, this not only benefits the six students but the wider community,”
says Cathy Chalmers, Principal of Greenmeadows Intermediate School.
Every year eligible schools in Auckland register their interest in representing Auckland at the convention. This year,
Greenmeadows Intermediate School was chosen from more than 20 applications.
