New food-in-schools initiative applauded
The New Zealand Food & Grocery Council applauds George Weston Foods for the launch of the ‘Nourish Our Kids’ programme for low decile schools, says Chief Executive Katherine Rich.
George Weston Foods, in partnership with KidsCan Charitable Trust, will by the end of the year triple the number of decile 1-4 primary and intermediate schools that receive Tip Top bread.
"Nourish Our Kids, which will deliver free bread to participating schools, is a substantial and generous addition to the number of food-in-schools programmes supported by members of the Food & Grocery Council," Mrs Rich says.
“Putting 100,000 loaves of bread into 300 schools each year is a fantastic contribution.
“George Weston has been involved in food-in-schools initiatives since 2008 and should be congratulated on this latest move.
“The Nourish Our Kids programme is a further example of the food industry playing its part in the community.”
Other initiatives include:
The ‘Kick Start’ programme, championed by
Sanitarium and Fonterra, which has delivered more than two
million breakfasts to children in decile 1-4 schools since
2008.
Fonterra’s ‘Milk for Schools’
programme.
FGC members’ participation in
‘Fuelled4life’, a healthy-food-in-schools
initiative.
Nestle’s ‘Be Healthy, Be Active’
online education resource for intermediate school children
launched last year in collaboration with Learning Media.
