Smith shears another one
Hawke’s Bay shearers look set to dominate the 53rd Golden Shears next week after cleaning-out the open final at the
Taumarunui Jamboree shears last night.
The big tile ent to Hastings gun Rowland Smith, confirming favouritism for the Gollden Sheras in Masterton with his
eighth win in five weeks.
The 26-yearold Smith again beat defending Golden Shears champion John Kirkpatrick, 2010 winner Cam Ferguson and 16-times
victor David Fagan, who were second, third and fourth last night.
It was also an important night for top-ranked woolhandler Keryn Herbert who won the Open woolhandling final, and who now
heads a number of competitors challenging World champion Joel Henare and title-holder Joanne Kumeroa and hoping to win a
Golden Shears title for the first time.
Shearers and woolhandlers today head for the Apiti Sports, north of Feilding, and then the Pahiatua Shears on Sunday and
a pre-shears woolhandling competition near Masterton before the Golden Shears start on Thursday.
