Western Springs Legend Makes A Comeback
Western Springs Speedway legend Graham Standring will again return to competition for just two shows on February 2 and
9.
Standring, who won a record 100 feature races at Western Springs, will return to the track driving the Aaron Drever
Motorsport Hawk/Aggressor that was campaigned across the International Midget Series by American driver Steve
Buckwalter.
Standring retired at the end of the 2008/09 season, but since then has made several returns, including one in 2010/11
when the three-time New Zealand Midget champion the first, and to date only, driver to win 100 feature races at Western
Springs, an honour that saw him presented with two celebratory rings.
Standring, who is the most recent driver to have won all three Speedway New Zealand titles in one season back in
1989/90, is nowadays kept busy with his role as part of the on-track commentary team with his in depth knowledge of the
sport whilst also performing the role of technical expert and co-commentator on Western Springs’ TV programme, The Dirt.
In what Standring is describing as his 250,000th comeback since retiring, Standring will contest this weekend’s North
Island Midget championship and next weekend’s Barry Butterworth Classic, which will see the fastest competitors starting
from the rear of the field.
Race day sees gates open at 5pm with the first race getting underway at 6.30. Adults are $30 with kids under the age of
