Music in Parks – free concerts in central Auckland
Local music fans can get their fix free this February at the 2013 Music in Parks series. Free concerts in your region this month include:
•Sat 2 Feb NBR NZ Opera, 6pm-8pm, Dingle Dell, St Heliers
Opera
This year’s Opera in the Park is truly special, featuring Edward Laurenson and Kieran Rayner (Freemasons Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists), as well as the company’s regular resident artist line-up. As twilight creeps in, this event promises to be a vibrant and entertaining mix of arias and ensembles. Accompanied by Robert Wiremu and compered by John Rosser.
•Sun 10 Feb - Coco Davis, 3pm-5pm, Domain Wintergardens, Auckland
Blues noir, cabaret
Singer-actor Coco Davis presents a songbook of the music of Bessie Smith, Lil' Green and Geeshie Wiley, updated and re-imagined as a David Lynch-esque blues-noir cabaret. These tales of gleeful revenge form Davis' debut album Electric Chair, produced with guitarist Tom Rodwell and featuring some of Auckland's great jazz notorieties.
•Fri 15 Feb - Midge Marsden, The Alibis, 6pm-9pm, Blockhouse Bay Beach Reserve, Blockhouse Bay
RnB, jump swing
Midge remains New Zealand's pre-eminent rhythm and blues artist with a professional career spanning almost 50 years, receiving an OBE for services to music in 2006. Midge is recording a new album. The event at Blockhouse Bay Beach Reserve is a personal highlight. Midge says he feels he has been "adopted by the locals in the district and always loves playing this annual summer celebration".
Auckland Council’s Music in Parks 2013 programme features over 40 performances from January 2 – March 24, 2013.
