Stump the Hump
Annual 24hr Challenge: 1-2 February 2013
Stump or be Stumped?
Stump the Hump is a unique 24hr walking event like no other in New Zealand. Aimed at endurance sportspeople and adventurous trampers,
this event challenges you to experience a day in the life of the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track and walk the 55km loop in a
single day. Neither a race, nor a run – its ap-peal stretches far and wide making it a unique, all inclusive, event
designed for daring individuals from all sporting backgrounds. Doubling in numbers each year this event is sure to sell
out in its third year with 250 participants.
Starting from Rarakau at midnight on Friday 1 February, participants trek over sandy beaches and through ancient
podocarp forest reaching the subalpine Okaka Lodge to enjoy hot porridge and watch dawn break over the Takitimu
Mountains, Stewart Island and the Southern Ocean. Walk down the Hump Ridge as the sun rises, through untouched beech
forest and across historic viaducts, arriving at Port Craig in time for lunch. Finish with a Saturday afternoon stroll
through native forest to Bluecliffs Beach. Bevan Hurley, The New Zealand Herald participated in Stump the Hump 2012 and
wrote “Even in the darkness the intriguing beauty of Fiordland is apparent.” The opportunity to hike overnight and watch
dawn rise over the Southern Seas will, for many people, be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Stump the Hump is the annual fundraising event for the Tuatapere Hump Track Charitable Trust and all proceeds go towards
the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track and the community of Tuatapere. The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a privately operated
track run for and by the community of Tuatapere. Hugh Conly, The Press, Christchurch writes about the track, “Today, the
Hump Ridge continues to inspire those who climb it … For most trampers, the views alone – extending from Fiordland to
Stewart Island – are worth the effort of the climb. On a clear day, it’s not hard for anyone to believe they are on top
of the world.”
