Thistle Hall is a vibrant community centre in the heart of New Zealand's cultural capital. We provide a community hall, meeting room and Wellington's only community gallery showcasing a range of artists and crafts people, from the established to the emerging. Thistle Hall is located on the corner of Cuba and Arthur streets. The shows on at Thistle Hall Community Gallery are run by the artists who hire it.

SURREALIST JUNK | JAMES HARCOURT

OPEN: 10.00am - 7.00pm Tuesday - Sunday.
SURREALIST JUNK This is an eclectic show from Wellington artist James Harcourt showcasing a wide variety of media.
It will include a series of photographic portraits of characters made of nikau leaves and rendered as masks, the original masks will also be on display. These characters interpret personalities born of the forest and speak about connection with the natural world. The realm of talking plants and teacher vegetation is available to those who choose to listen to their ancestral environment.
Alongside the photographs are abstract paintings that represent landscapes of the first sounds. They can be a heartbeat, a drum skin or a pulse on a wave. We are born of sound and live as frequency, tune in.
In addition three small sculptures, 'The Ascetic', 'The Witness' and 'Trans-Central Medication' aka 'Deep Image' will be available for viewing Woven 'Bakpaks' by Ellen Coup made from harakeke will also be on show. They are a design Ellen has been honing for a number of years. All work is available for purchase.

'False Idols' is a collection of works by designer/ illustrator Chris Dwan which reflects on a personal mythology created over the past year.
The False Idols series contemplates a world beyond our own, filled with the familiar and the bizarre. A world inhabited by whimsical creatures, spirits, demons and demigods that provide a quaint perspective to reflect on life, death, fate, the human soul, and the power of faith. 'False Idols' is a chance to step inside the mind of the artist and witness another world of imagination which takes inspiration from street art, tattoo, skate and popular culture.
The artist will be on site to answer any questions and to enter jovial discussion about a multitude of topics.
On display are custom made framed prints, limited edition unframed prints, skateboard art, colouring in books, lucky charms, and a hand painted vase by special guest William Duignan.
