Fairhaven Student Joint Winner Of National Poster And Poetry Competition
Ellie Coombes, a year 6 student at Fairhaven School has been named as a joint winner of an anti-bullying poster and poem
competition, which attracted hundreds of entries from around the country. Due to Ellie’s efforts, Fairhaven School will
today (Friday 7 December) be presented with a $1,000 cheque from TrustPower.
Fairhaven School students were among thousands of primary and intermediate school students from around the country that
attended the ‘You’ve Got The Power’ show presented by award-winning magician Elgregoe who is sponsored by Tauranga based
electricity generator and retailer TrustPower.
The ‘You’ve Got The Power’ show teaches key values that educate students about how to treat others and has a strong
emphasis on anti-bullying.
Using tricks, puppets, ventriloquism, music, song, stories and amazing props (including live birds), these important
messages are conveyed to the children in a fun, fast-paced show.
As a follow-up to the show, children had the chance to enter an anti-bullying focused poster or poem into a competition,
with hundreds of students taking part nationwide.
As part of her prize, Ellie Coombes will receive a Mega Magic Box valued at $100 and a $200 prize pack from TrustPower.
Her poem will also feature in Elgregoe’s 2013 ‘You’ve Got The Power’ show. Thanks to Ellie’s efforts, her school will
also receive a $1,000 cheque.
Greg Britt, who presents his show as Elgregoe, says Fairhaven School host the ‘You've Got The Power’ show at their
school annually and staff tell him it reinforces their key values at school.
“In her winning poem Ellie has confronted some important questions surrounding why people bully as well as the
importance of talking about this issue. It’s great to see that Ellie feels empowered to ask these tough questions,” says
Greg.
TrustPower Community Relations Coordinator Suzi Luff says TrustPower is proud to support Elgregoe’s ‘You’ve Got The
Power’ show.
“Elgregoe’s show offers a unique way of getting students thinking and talking about the choices they make, and the
feedback from schools is that his message is getting through and making a real difference,” says Suzi.
Maddie Thomas from Whangaparaoa College was the other joint winner in this competition. She also receives a Mega Magic
Box valued at $100 and a $200 prize pack from TrustPower. Her poem will also feature in Elgregoe’s 2013 ‘You’ve Got The
