NeverBefore Comes Ashore.
03 December 2012 | Press Release | NeverBefore
The innovative colony for urban change, NeverBefore, has lifted its anchor and shifted its headquarters to inner-city Wellington.
NeverBefore operated in an old tugboat, the SS Think Tanker, for over eight months. Their radical Apocalypse Awareness Raising projects have been capturing the attention of national and international press alike. Not all coverage has been positive, however. Critics have dismissed the organisation as a ‘group of idealistic artists’ who favour style and theory over substance. (See “‘Hipster Survivor’ off the coast of Wellington”).
The founder and spokesperson Skye Williams says this criticism played some part in their decision to make the shift to dry land. “We realised we needed to live amongst the people we are trying to engage. There was a special spirit on the SS Think Tanker, but we’re confident we can recreate that vibe at our new co-ordinates in Thorndon”.
The public will get a chance to experience the new NeverBefore headquarters (Glenbervie Terrace, Thorndon) for themselves in March 2013 when they open their doors for a series of information seminars. The evenings will be held in association with the New Zealand Fringe Festival. Williams explains, “The Fringe is known for its breakthrough works of innovative art. NeverBefore is known for its breakthrough acts of radial change. It’s a perfect match”.
NeverBefore is also inviting people to submit their own proposals on how people should respond to the apocalypse. The ideas that garner the greatest support will be implemented by NeverBefore and the contributors granted an optional twelve month live-in scholarship at the colony. “This is the end-game” declares Williams, “and we want to facilitate a discussion on how we should play it. This the point where NeverBefore joins forces with the people to create a real community based social movement to save our way of life”.
