The Yoots in Paekakariki!
The fabulous Yoots are returning to St Peter's Hall in Paekakariki on Friday 7 December a year after they tore the roof off with a show widely considered to be the year's best at the iconic community hall.
Featuring Joe Lindsay, Iain Gordon and Toby Laing (Fat Freddy's Drop), Sam Lindsay, Mike Fabulous (The Black Seeds), Dan and Chris Yeabsley, Paul Hoskin and Adan Tijerina (The Eggs), Will Ricketts (Phoenix Foundation/Wild Bill Ricketts), Craig Poll, Lucien Johnson (Shogun Orchestra).
The release of ‘Sing Along With The Yoots!’ in 2011 kicked off a veritable conga line of exciting entertainment that threaded from the ‘Paekakariki Hall Dance’ on to SPLORE and then to WOMAD and beyond.
The album hit the right note with reviewers and fans alike. The New Zealand Herald described it as a “delightfully brassy, bouncy affair”, while National Radio's Nick Bollinger found it “raw, spirited, inspired and often virtuosic” music making. The album also made it into the NZ Top 30 Pop Album Charts and The Listener’s Top Albums of 2011. The Yoots were also awarded AMPLIFIER ALBUM OF THE YEAR and featured on several national music critics' best of the year lists. Meanwhile at SPLORE, the Herald witnessed a “quintessential Splore moment (with) beaming punters joining together in a celebration of music and culture”.
But what does it all mean? In a nutshell, those present witnessed an electrifying showcase of classic waiata – a part of the rich and wonderful musical heritage of these islands – performed by seasoned and renowned musicians, well schooled in the myriad styles of stage-rocking music: jazz, old time R’N’B, country-soul, calypso-ska, street brass, high life and afro-beat.
With a new album of wartime waiata in the works, the Yoots are also in rehearsals for WOMAD 2013, having been invited to perform with the legendary 80-strong Aotearoa National Maori Choir who are reforming specially for the event.
The gig at St Peter's Hall is a rare opportunity to catch this genuinely uplifting band in an intimate old worlde environment.
