Tauranga Dance Show to Feature 84 Year Old TV Sensation
TAURANGA, Thursday 8 November 2012: An octogenarian TV sensation will be the oldest of 600 performers dancing at Rhythmz Dance Co’s annual event later this month.
The ‘Born to Dance’ production will feature 84 year old Melva Cummins who has appeared on TVNZ’s Good Morning show, alongside 35 various dance routines showcasing adult, teen, children and preschool students from across the Bay.
Rthythmz Dance Co owner and choreographer, Carla Beazley, says Melva proves that people can have rhythm and a love for dance at any age.
“There are eight decades separating our oldest performer from our youngest who is only two years-old. Melva’s appearance is very special and inspirational for our students.
“This year’s show will be a complete extravaganza with colourful costumes, interesting makeup effects and a professional light show. Our students are being taught dance skills, but also how to entertain. Our audience is going to have a ball,” says Beazley.
Performances to watch out for are the ‘aerial silks’, where dancers take breathtaking drops while wrapped in silk, and ‘fitness through the ages’, which demonstrates the evolution of fitness from Jane Fonda inspired jazzercise right through to the most recent fitness phenomenon - Bokwa.
Beazley says that every year she is astounded by the energy and skill that is brought to each performance.
“I can’t wait for the public to see what we’ve been learning. It’s a chance to show what great talent we have right here in Tauranga. Everyone on stage really enjoys themselves because they are all ‘born to dance!"
Rhythm Dance Co offers non-competitive dance classes for all ages in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and surrounding areas.
The production will be held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th of November at Bethlehem College with show times at 2pm and 6pm. Tickets are available from Baycourt Theatre or online at www.ticketdirect.co.nz. $20 for adults (17yrs & over), $12 for children (5 - 16yrs), $5 for under 5yrs, $15 Senior (65+) and $55 for families (2 adults, 2 children).
