LevelK dives into The Last Ocean
The Copenhagen/NY based sales house LevelK has joined forces with New Zealand filmmaker Peter Young to bring to the world an urgent and intriguing documentary that lifts the lid on commercial fishing in the most pristine marine ecosystem on Earth, the Ross Sea, Antarctica.
“This story comes from a place few have had the privilege to see - yet it has relevance to people from all over the world” said Young. “I look forward to working with LevelK and bringing this film to as large an audience as possible.”
The timing is right for a documentary that sheds light on the global effects over-fishing is having on our oceans. With the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) voting this week on the future of the oceans surrounding Antarctica, support for protecting the Ross Sea is rolling in from influential players such as Leonardo Di Caprio, Richard Branson and Sam Neill and alliances with Environmental organizations such as WWF, Pew Environmental Group and Greenpeace.
“We are extremely proud being involved in "saving" The Last Ocean and see the great importance to create world-wide awareness. The Last Ocean is an amazing entertaining documentary that keeps you in your seat and makes you understand,” said Tine Klint, managing director of LevelK.
The Last Ocean is written and directed by Peter Young, one of New Zealand’s leading documentary makers. The 87-minute documentary tells the story of the race to protect Earth’s last untouched ocean before it is destroyed by our insatiable appetite for fish. Through insightful interviews and breathtaking cinematography, Young explores the complexity of the world’s southern-most fishery where, each summer an international fleet breaks through ice to target the Ross Sea’s large and lucrative Antarctic Tooth fish. The fish are then re-branded to the more palatable name ‘Chilean Sea-bass’ and are highly prized in the upmarket restaurants of New York and Asia. But Antarctic tooth fish are a top predator in the Ross Sea – lose them and the natural balance of the last pristine marine ecosystem on Earth will be lost forever.
The Last Ocean is supported by NZ on Air, the New Zealand Film Commission, Antarctic Ocean Alliance, Biotherm, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Park Road Post, Global Ocean, and Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition.
The Last Ocean is the latest addition to the LevelK’s growing documentary label and joins ranks with other acclaimed titles: ½ Revolution, Moon Rider, Planet RE:think and Prostitution Behind the Veil.
