Kids World Championship Event at St Heliers on Sunday
A week of World Championship Triathlon events gets underway this Sunday with the World Champs Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids
TRYathlon taking place at St Heliers’ Vellenoweth Green.
The Barfoot & Thompson World Championship Series Grand Final is being hosted on Auckland’s waterfront from 14-22 October, bringing
competitors from over 20 countries to New Zealand. The championship is kick-started on Sunday with the Sanitarium
Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon for kids from the ages of seven to fifteen.
The event features all the iconic components of Weet-Bix TRYathlon’s such as a complimentary breakfast and all
participants receiving medals, and has the added feature of being part of the Triathlon World Championship.
Participants will receive their medals at the finish line from elite NZ triathlete Tony Dodds and Joao Silva from
Portugal who was a London Olympic and winner of the Yokohama ITU event, as well as netball star Temepara Bailey (nee
George). Bailey has had a host of medals placed around her neck in a glittering netball career, including a World
Championship Gold and two Commonwealth Gold Medals.
General Manager of Sanitarium Pierre van Heerden is delighted to be staging the event this Sunday saying – “it is
wonderful that the World Champs Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will start the World Championship week in Auckland
and that kids get the chance to be part of it.”
“The Weet-Bix TRYathlon events have always been about encouraging kiwi kids to get active and have a go. The series has
also been the catalyst for many current NZ athletes who will be competing at the World Champs to go on and fulfil their
dreams.”
Many of the country’s top triathletes have been past participants in the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon events, including
Andrea Hewitt who finished sixth at the recent London Olympics.
The World Champs Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon gets underway at 9am on Sunday at Vellenoweth Green at St Heliers
with 1000 kids taking part.
