A Delightful Feast by MSVA Students
MIT School of Performing Arts presented its spring production, "Godspell" September 6, 7 and 8. It played with a live
band on stage in Spotlight Theatre in Tavern Lane, Papatoetoe, Manukau.
Godspell, based loosely on the Gospels and parables of Jesus, remains one of the most popular sweet rock musicals of all time. A
musical conceived and written by John Michael Tebelak with lyrics and music by Stephen Schwartz, follows the story of
Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew and featured some of the best-loved songs from modern musicals, including Day By Day and All For the Best.
Production did not just dust off some 40 year-old period piece. This play had a very fresh and contemporary feel in both
its design and approach, by allowing the actors derive many scenes.
Directors Cat Ruka & Jason Te Mete had chosen to collaboratively devise this piece utilizing a variety of choreographic and theatrical
methods with 2nd year level students; who were given the opportunity to significantly contribute to the creative
process. “As teachers we feel it is imperative that at 2nd year level students are given the opportunity to experience
the process of devising, where they can contribute to the creative process and therefore experience a sense of
collective ownership and responsibility”.
The directors’ were bold and took risks; the entire play had an interactive approach of there being no fourth wall. The
show was designed with an interesting ‘menu style’ approach where audience picked what they would like for entree, mains
and dessert. “Whether the end result is successful or not, we believe the process of discovery and problem-solving is an
invaluable learning experience for those who wish to pursue a sustainable career in the performing arts”.
The show was very welcomed and appreciated by the theatre lovers and local community; with closing night being sold out.
