KBB Music Festival Bigger than Ever
A record number of 134 groups from 48 Secondary Schools in the greater Auckland region have entered the country’s
largest regional youth music festival to be held on 21-25 August. A true celebration of music, the KBB Music Festival
will once again be the highlight of over 3,500 young musicians’ performing calendar as Concert Bands, Jazz Bands,
Symphony Orchestras and Chamber Orchestras assemble to give free public performances in the professional acoustic venue
of the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the adjoining St Mary’s Chapel in Parnell.
“The Festival is recognised for the quality of the music that students perform,” says Dr. Trevor Thwaites, Chairperson
of the Festival. “This is a reflection of the commitment of both the students and their teachers.”
Part of the Festival’s success is due to the quality of its experienced adjudicators who provide vital feedback for each
group. This year, the adjudicators are Owen Clarke and Rupert D’Cruze (Symphony Orchestras and Concert Bands); Roger
Manins and Ron Samsom (Jazz Big Bands); and Miranda Hutton and Shelley Wilkinson (Chamber Orchestras).
Formerly known as the Auckland Secondary Schools Band and Orchestra Festival, the festival was renamed the KBB Music
Festival in recent years to honour the long-time support of its principal sponsor, KBB Music.
“We believe in the importance of supporting our musical community and playing our part in fostering the musical future
of this country,” says Paul Skipper, Director of KBB Music. “We are proud to be involved with the KBB Music Festival
over the last twenty-two years.”
The KBB Music Festival will culminate to two highly-anticipated Gala Concerts featuring the best groups selected by the
adjudicators. The 2.30pm Gala Concert will feature Chamber Orchestras and Concert Bands, while the 6.30pm Gala Concert
will feature Symphony Orchestras and Jazz Bands. The ensemble receiving a new award, the Peter Goddard Memorial Award,
as well as the group selected for Chairperson’s Command Performance, will be presented at one of the Gala Concerts.
“Whether you attend as a performer or as a listener, you will come away invigorated and inspired by the musicianship and
exuberance of all participants,” says Dr. Thwaites. “It is through these performers that we can be assured of a quality

founding member of the Auckland Secondary Schools Band and Orchestra Festival, Peter Goddard served on the committee for
over 20 years. Whilst not a performer himself, Peter valued the gift of music and recongnised its importance in the
lives of young people, irrespective of school decile or cultural background. Peter passed away in February 2012, and the
festival committee has instigated an annual memorial award in his honour. The Award will be presented to an ensemble
whose performance, presentation or behaviour embodies the values that Peter Goddard held. Chairperson’s Command
Performance The Festival Chairperson will select a group that both the Chairperson and the Adjudicators believe have
added something unique to the Festival by way of one of their performance pieces. The group will be invited to perform
this work at one of the Gala Concerts.
