Broadway Star to Feature at 2013 NZ Singing School as Black Barn Artist in Residence
Liz Callaway
The NZSS Trust is thrilled to be welcoming US Broadway star, Liz Callaway, as the 2013 Black Barn Artist in Residence.
Liz Callaway is a Tony®Nominee and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer and recording artist. She made her Broadway debut
in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Baby, and for five years, won acclaim as Grizabella in Cats. She has also starred in the original casts of Miss Saigon, The Three Musketeers, and The Look of Love.
She also has an extensive career history in Off-Broadway shows and as a concert and recording artist. Alongside winning
many awards, she has performed alongside many other musical greats such as Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick and Stevie
Wonder, and has appeared at The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Ravina, The Hollywood Bowl and throughout the world.
But New Zealanders may unknowingly be more familiar with her Princess status – Liz is the voice of several Disney
Princesses and other characters. Liz sang the Academy Award nominated song “Journey to the Past” in the animated feature Anastasia and is also the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin and the King of Thieves and The Return of Jafar. Other film work includes the singing voice of the title character in The Swan Princess, Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, Beauty and the Beast, and The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars.
“We are thrilled to be able to give students at the 2013 School the opportunity to be mentored by an established music
theatre great. Artists of Liz’s calibre are a real inspiration to students on the beginning of their musical journeys,
and our Singing School gives them not only musical inspiration and knowledge, but also insight into the life of a
professional singer. It is always an eye opener for them” says New Zealand Singing School Chair, Eileen von Dadelszen.
Last year’s inaugural Black Barn Artist in Residence, was New Zealand-born Anna Leese.
“The students learned a great deal from Anna and were impressed with the professional approach and effort Anna puts into
her career at such an early age” Eileen said. “We are indebted to Black Barn for their sponsorship of the Artist in
residence programme. It allows us to put more gloss onto what is already quite a remarkable School with a brilliant
faculty”.
The 2013 School is already far down the track with planning and enrolments will open end of June and close 20th August –
