HOME New Zealand Magazine Announces International Judge for the 16th Annual Home of the Year Award

James Timberlake of KieranTimberlake Architects in Philadelphia has been named as the international member of HOME New Zealand magazine’s Home of the Year jury. James sits alongside New Zealand judges Patrick Clifford of Architectus and Jeremy Hansen, Editor of HOME.

KieranTimberlake have recently been awarded the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award and in 2008 were recognised with the Architecture Firm Award which is the highest honour bestowed by the American Institute of Architects. In 2008, the firm was commissioned by New York’s Museum of Modern Art to develop a pre-fab building for an exhibition there. More recently, KieranTimberlake won the competition to design the new Embassy of The United States of America in London. The firm was also one of 13 invited by Brad Pitt’s Make it Right Foundation to develop designs for low-cost housing in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

“This is James’ first visit to New Zealand and we are privileged to have such a well-respected architect join us to help judge our 16th annual Home of the Year award,” explains HOME editor Jeremy Hansen, who organises the awards. Previous international judges of the award have included high-profile international architects Brendan MacFarlane, Glenn Murcutt, Charles Renfro, Kerstin Thompson and John Wardle.

Patrick Clifford won the very first HOME New Zealand magazine Home of the Year award 16 years ago. Patrick founded Architectus in 1987 in Auckland. The firm now also has several offices in Australia. Their well-known projects include Trinity Apartments in Parnell, master-planning for Wynyard Quarter on Auckland’s waterfront, the train station at New Lynn and St Peter’s College Technology Building. Patrick is also currently serving as the President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

“It is only appropriate that Patrick join us as our first Home of the Year winner and as a well-respected, much-awarded New Zealand architect,” says Jeremy.

HOME New Zealand magazine’s Home of the Year award is entering its 16th year, with a $15,000 cash prize awarded to the winning architects. Each year dozens of entries are critiqued and narrowed down to only the best finalists. The judges then visit every shortlisted home to assess the quality in design, sustainability, fit with the land and owners, and use of materials.

HOME New Zealand magazine’s Home of the Year award is announced at a gala event in August. The winning home and finalists in the award are featured in the August/September issue of HOME, on sale August 4.
