Winner Of Tauranga Youth Spirit Award Announced
Morgene Mitchell from Aquinas College has been named as the winner of the TrustPower Tauranga Youth Community Spirit Award.
Run in conjunction with the TrustPower Tauranga Community Awards, the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award recognises secondary school students’ service to the school and the community. The Award is jointly run by TrustPower and the Tauranga City Council.
Morgene was recommended for the Award by Aquinas College, which undertook a nomination process to identify those students who displayed the qualities and values the Award seeks to recognise.
To be considered for the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award students had to have contributed widely as a student to their college/school; developed good relationships, treating others with respect and care; given service to school or community projects; and been a good ambassador for the college/school and the region.
TrustPower Community Relations Representative Suzi Luff says Morgene is hard-working and generous with her time and skills.
“Morgene gets right behind student health initiatives at her school and really stood out when it came to fundraising for teen cancer. She volunteers at Speedway and has been involved with St John Youth for six years already. Last year alone, Morgene contributed over 700 hours towards St John as a volunteer at different community events providing health care and support,” says Miss Luff.
“Morgene is an excellent example of a student who makes a real difference in peoples’ lives by her shining example of service to others,” says Aquinas College teacher, Richard Parker.
For winning the Award Morgene received a framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 going to her personally and $250 being given to a community group or organisation of her choice.
The
TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award will be presented to
Morgene at the TrustPower Community Awards, being held on
the evening of Monday 21 June. Morgene will announce which
community group or organisation will receive the $250
donation at the Community
Awards.
