McCauley leaves Subway – Avanti Pro Cycling Team to focus on Commonwealth Games medal

Gordon McCauley has left the Subway – Avanti Pro Cycling Team to focus on winning a medal in the individual Time Trial
at this year’s Commonwealth Games being held in India in October.
McCauley won a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the time trial in Melbourne 2006 and feels he needs to structure and
organise his own schedule to be totally focused on adding another medal to his collection.
“Since breaking the national (time trial) record at this year’s elite nationals I have had real belief I can win another
medal at this year’s games,” the five time National Champion said.
“I have had great opportunities with the Subway-Avanti team and I’ve really enjoyed my time with the team and consider
them all good friends, but I need to be selfish to achieve my medal goal.”
“I wouldn’t be able contribute to the team as the Commonwealth Games got closer as I will be in full on TT (time trial)
mode, and that just wouldn’t be fair to the team.”
McCauley is the current co-leader in the RaboPlus National Points series with team mate Matt Gorter but says the series
is not a focus going forward and does not think he will race in many of the remaining seven events in the 12 race
series.
Subway-Avanti Team Manager and Co-owner Greg Hume said McCauley’s departure would provide more opportunities for the
remaining team members to take more of a leadership role within the team.
“Gordon’s experience and high profile will be missed but with the calibre of the riders we have I have no doubt we will
still be very competitive both here and overseas. We have a number of goals to look forward to.”
The team will remain focused on winning the National Points Series with Gorter, who is well positioned for this, and it
travels to China in July to race in the UCI 2.HC Tour of Qinghai Lake.
Hume said National Under 23 Time Trial Champion Michael Vink, who is currently overseas riding for a club team in
Belgium, has huge potential and arrives back in New Zealand in September to prepare the World Championships being held
in Melbourne in October.
