MAORI CULTS by Alan Taylor
Aesthete Parnell Gallery would like to welcome you to our opening exhibition for 2010 to view Maori Cults, which features a series of paintings based on the controversial and courageous 19th Century Maori protest and religious Movements by the much respected Auckland expressionist artist, Alan Taylor.
This exhibition delivers a mix of important elements that brought Alan to prominence since the 1970s; paintings that are vibrantly coloured, highly detailed, filled with profuse expressionistic symbolism and infused with spirituality. These skilful works continue to testify to Alan’s insight and deep understanding of Maori culture.
Alan was born in England in 1933 and arrived in New Zealand in 1953. He is well versed in Maori history, art and architecture and has written several books relating to Maori and European culture in New Zealand.
With an artistic career which spans 40 years, one of Alan’s achievements is, through his use of an array of potent Maori and Polynesian iconography, to have established a visual language that is unique to his work and which unites cultural boundaries.
Alan is represented in the Auckland Art Gallery, Rotorua Museum and the James Wallace Collection.
