Cycle Challenge On Track For Biggest Yet
A significant increase in solo and international riders is helping keep Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge on track for one of its biggest events yet.
“The most entries we have ever had was 11,337 in 2005 – on the Monday morning before the event, we had reached 10,873 entries, which is already the second highest ever, and it’s still foreseeable that we could top the 2005 figure,” said Keith Crate, Event Director of Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, which is New Zealand’s premier one day cycling event.
“International entries are the highest ever – we have 362 entries from 19 different countries. Currently, we have more international entries than those from Taupo – although, locals traditionally enter the event in the last week,” said Crate.
“Riders in the BNZ Solo currently make up 52% of all entries which equates to at least 5677 cyclists tackling the 160km course – this is the most solo riders we have ever had,” continued Crate.
“Over the last few years, we have added different components to the event to cater for different riders – the Contact Huka Mountain Bike Challenge and the WorkoutZone Women’s Road Race have proved very popular,” said Crate.
Once again, the Avanti Men’s Classic has attracted a top quality field with more high profile names expected in this last week.
Online entries for the Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge remain open until Tuesday with a $20 late fee. Riders can enter at the Great Lake Centre on Friday between 10am and 10pm and 6am – 8am Saturday.
