'A Bird in the Hand' (detail) an Etching and Woodcut by Ben Reid, 2009.
Opening at Solander on Wednesday 4 November is an exhibition featuring new drawings and prints from regular exhibitors at Solander, Catherine Macdonald and Margaret Silverwood, and introducing Wellington art lovers to Christchurch artist Ben Reid.
Catherine Macdonald's new series of works titled 'The Sky's the Limit' looks at the period of time between possibility and certainty. When things are 'up in the air' and there is still a chance of things turning out the way you hope they might. Macdonald's works continue to also explore our relationship between the animals that share our lives and the perspective they may have.
Margaret Silverwood presents two series of new work using 1967 House and Garden magazines, and the new suburbia they represented, as her starting point. Silverwood explores the push and pull between our obsessive control of our home surroundings, and the wild world just waiting in the wings. Her second series has come out of her love for Edward Hicks' Peaceable Kingdom paintings. These works are scenes from Silverwood's personal Australasian peaceable kingdom - a utopian vision of how things might have been.
Ben Reid exhibits 'A Bird in the Hand', a series of new prints exploring the many conflicting emotions he experiences when surveying the impact of human habitation on this country's fragile ecology. While he mourns the loss of some native birds he celebrates the hope that extinction is not the inevitable fate of our endangered birds: we can create alternative scenarios in our role as custodians of the country's natural heritage.
