Ladyhawke Soars
It’s not the longest climb to the top for a Kiwi album but it’s up there. The momentum of a six-Tui haul bounces Ladyhawke the final six notches she required to give her a #1 New Zealand album.
The set has taken 30 chart weeks to reach the summit and it has been a year and three weeks since its September 29 #16
debut last year. For the record, the longest climb for a local act to top the list is Goldenhorse’s Riverhead which took 54 chart weeks and 22 actual months from October 2002 until August 2004 for a three-week run at the top.
The Ladyhawke album also achieves a gold-certification this week while a third hit single, Magic, is #38 on the Singles Chart.
The Masterton-born electro pop chick headlines an Auck/Welli/Chch tour at the end of the month.
And after the Tui wins, Pip Brown is now up for five ARIA Awards across the ditch – Best Female Artist, Best Pop
Release, Breakthrough Artist-Album, Breakthrough Artist-Single (My Delirium) and Single Of The Year – although there has been no shortage of controversy in Australia over whether the NZ-born,
UK-based artist should even be eligible.
Next week’s albums #1 battle will see Ladyhawke attempt to fend off fellow locals Gin Wigmore and Flight Of The Conchords, as well as the new Twilight movie installment’s soundtrack New Moon.
Maisey Rika
2009 is proving to be the year for Whakatane singer / songwriter Maisey Rika. Her self-titled six-track debut EP brushed the Albums list for a frame on March 16. And now that set’s #40 showing has
been bettered by her 12-track album proper Tohu which arrives 10 places higher at #30.
It’s into overdrive on the live circuit now though as Maisey plays dates in Papakura and Hamilton this weekend before
heading to Tokyo to perform in the 2011 Rugby World Cup tent for five days.
Maisey was a featured vocalist on E Hine: An Anthology of Maori Love Songs by the St Joseph’s Maori Girls College which was a former winner of the Best Maori Language Album.

#17 OneRepublic - All The Right Moves
The Timbaland factor took OneRepublic to the top with debut hit Apologize two years back. Then their sophomore Stop And Stare proved them no one-hit-wonder making #11. Ryan Tedder, Zach Filkins, Drew Brown, Brent Brown and Eddie Fisher return as All The Right Moves sees them secure the week’s highest new entry at #17.
#30 Robbie Williams - Bodies
Thirty-five-year-old Englishman and former Take That member Robbie Williams returns after a three-year absence to claim
his 23rd singles ink in New Zealand. Bodies, lead track from a November album, opens its account two slots higher than the #32 peak of his last outing Advertising Space in 2006.
The New Albums
#4 Michael Buble - Crazy Love
Canadian crooner Michael Buble’s Crazy Love claims top spot in the US and Australia this week. In Godzone, the 34 year-old takes it straight to #4. His self-titled
first album landed Buble an out-of-the-box chart-topper in 2003. Crazy Love makes it a total of five hit albums here, with the latest being his second release of 2009 following the June #22 Me At Madison Square Garden.
#25 Mariah Carey - Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel
Mariah Carey’s albums run now stretches to 19 years here. New at #25, Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel takes her tally to 16 and sees her rank as the third most successful female Albums act in the history of the Official
New Zealand Music Chart. She ranks behind Madonna (20) and Barbra Streisand (17). She’s second on the females Singles
rankings with 37 hits behind Madonna’s 52.

#38 Tokio Hotel - Humanoid
German four-piece rock band Tokio Hotel has its first New Zealand chart album at #38 this week. Humanoid is their third studio set.
