New Zealand Designer Reaches For The Stars At International Fashion Event
New Zealand fashion designer Jimmy Lim has achieved major international success in being selected as the only New Zealand designer to showcase his collections at Malaysia International Fashion Week.
The 30 year old designer from Auckland, a fashion graduate of the Auckland University of Technology will show his Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer 2009 collections alongside other top international designers as the finale show at Malaysia International Fashion Week in Kuala Lumpur on November 26 2008.
“It has been mind blowing to be chosen to show at this international event. It has been a long road and I am very much looking forward to promoting my label and New Zealand fashion at this high profile event”, says Lim.
Lim is no stranger to the local fashion scene and represented New Zealand as the Deutz New Zealand Fashion Design Ambassador at London Fashion Week which secured him a personal connection with Sir Jimmy Choo who inspired and mentored him in expanding his home-grown New Zealand fashion label internationally.
In naming his Autumn/Winter collection “Silent Pitch”, Lim drew inspiration for his collection from the classic murder theme in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie soundtrack PSYCHO, after gaining interest in classical horror, thriller and suspense movies which started the mood-board for his latest designs. Lim is fascinated how scary movies are reflected upon us and says “We often create our own fear and problems in life, and it is my belief that fear is the number one aspect which holds people back from achieving their dreams, hence the strong need for us all to embrace it.” The young designer linked this idea to his work, especially his seasonal signature prints.
His ready-to-wear collection includes excitedly mixed hard and soft fabrications to create texture, with enzyme washed, peroxide bleached and sand-blasted denim dominating the collection, whilst clashing perfectly with soft jersey knit, silk and satin. Lim’s intentionally included contradictions combine pants which are either slim or baggy, dresses relaxed or tight, tops with layers of different lengths, extra-large pockets and his own limited signature printed tops.
All pieces are specially designed to allow the wearer to mix and match, creating their own personal style with no rules, one of Lim’s all-time beliefs. “Jimmy Lim gives everyone the freedom of judgment to have their own say on their own personal belonging, starting from how they dress themselves, giving them the freedom to create and play with fashion”, says Lim.
“I am thrilled and honoured to be contributing to Malaysia International Fashion Week. It has helped significantly to put my New Zealand label firmly on the world’s fashion map”, says Lim.
