Credit Crunch See Kiwis Stay Down Under For Christmas
Beach Holidays fields record numbers of festive bookings for Mangawhai properties from New Zealand residents
Holiday homes in Mangawhai, a popular and picturesque destination 90 minutes north of Auckland, are always hot property
- particularly over the Christmas period. But the town's largest holiday home rental company has noticed a new trend for
the 08/09 season. As well as the anticipated bookings from overseas visitors, Beach Holidays
(http://www.beach-holidays.co.nz ) is experiencing an unprecedented demand from Kiwis who would usually look off-shore
for their Christmas break.
Beach Holidays is Mangawhai's only locally owned and operated holiday home rental company. With properties on its books
ranging from chic contemporary condos to eco-conscious cottage retreats, it has something to suit every taste and
budget. The agency has just added new listings available over the festive season to its website, to meet the increased
level of local interest.
A relatively undiscovered seaside village until recently, Mangawhai now has a growing reputation as a holiday hotspot.
This owes much to its spectacular subtropical coastline, making it a paradise for lovers of all things aquatic. Enjoying
five beaches within a 15-minute drive, visitors are spoilt for choice, whether they want to surf, sail, snorkel, swim
safely with the kids or just laze on a long stretch of white sand.
But it's not just as a marine playground that Mangawhai shines - there are plenty of onshore diversions too. Landlubbers
can play a round on the 18-hole golf course, take a guided tour through ancient forests or join the 'Walking Weekend' in
March. The area is also home to a thriving arts community and foodies are well catered for thanks to fresh seafood and
locally produced wine, chocolate and olive oil.
Beach Holidays was recently taken over by a young couple, Mariska Glover and David Glover in a lifestyle change becoming
more common with the so-called Generation Y. Mangawhai is a magnet for Y-ers looking for a more relaxed pace of life and
a safe environment to bring up children.
Mariska Glover says: "We were looking for a better work-life balance, so when the opportunity to take over Beach
Holidays came up, it was the perfect fit. Mangawhai is a lifestyle destination, which is why it's proving so popular
with Kiwis who don't want an expensive overseas trip during the downturn. With its combination of culture, beach life,
fine food and stylish accommodation, you don't need to leave the country!"
