Super Sedans Bring The Thunder To The Park
Competitors in the Pacific Sheet & Coil NZ Super Sedan Series move to Pukekohe Park Raceway this weekend for Round 4 of their 2008/2009 championship in
conjunction with the annual Thunder In The Park meeting at the South Auckland circuit.
Under this season's exciting new format not only are they involved in head to head battles within their own series but
they are also running in the two exciting new championships created for similar type cars - the GT1 and NZGT Series.
In the GT1 Series for the quickest of the cars Invercargill driver Glen Brazier in his Chev Corvette and former Super
Sedan Champion Grant Brennan of Tauranga in his Brennan SB2 Corvette are faring best of the Super Sedan campaigners.
Also well to the fore is Wayne Conder of Auckland in his Camaro and Te Puke's Peter Stewart in his Cortina-Chev.
Two combinations, father and son duo Kevin & Stuart Bovey and brothers Matt & Dwayne Carter are competing in the class - the Wellington based Bovey's in their Jaguar XKR V8 and the Carter's of
Auckland in their Falcon V8 Supercar.
However, under the new format they not only have each other to overcome on the track but also competitors from series
such as Super GT and OSCA. That has propelled the likes of Brazier and Brennan into warfare with cars such as Carl
Hansen's TVR.
As they arrive at Round 4 of the series Brennan leads the Super Sedan points from Brazier who has missed a round earlier
in the series.
Meanwhile several Super Sedan competitors have found a home in the NZGT class. Among the quickest is Craig Corliss of
Auckland in his ex-Brad Jones Falcon V8 Supercar. Corliss was the fastest qualifier of all at the previous round at
Manfeild. A couple of spins in the races cost him a top result but he is certainly a pacesetter. Warren Lauder of Otaki
in his Starlet V8 is another who has been competitive to date while others to secure good results in NZGT have been
Roger Conder in his Nissan Skyline, Conrad Ekdahl in his VK Commodore, Kevin Gurney (Commodore), Waitara drivers Phill
Dravitski in a Commodore and Ross Calgher in a Dodge Viper V10 plus Derin Greenslade in his Toyota Starlet.
Corliss currently leads the Super Sedan points in this section with 177 points. Lauder is second with 148 followed by
Conder.
Both categories are able to test on the 2.841 kilometre Pukekohe track on Friday before they receive fifteen minute
qualifying sessions on Saturday morning. Both categories have a rolling start race on Saturday afternoon followed by two
races on Sunday - the first a delayed grid start race and the final event a handicap race. All three GT1 races are held
over twelve laps while the NZGT races are over a distance of ten laps.
Major sponsor of the Super Sedan Series, Pacific Sheet & Coil was established in 1995 to service local markets for coated and uncoated flat rolled products. Associate series
sponsors are Inspection and Consultancy Services and Engine Detox Services Ltd.
