The Big Day Out brings you
Dad’s Tips &
the Dads of the Year
The Big Day Out is truly one of the great gatherings of the cultural tribes of the nation. The Punks, the Students, the
Indie Kids and the Goths had it all to start with in ’94, rubbing shoulders with what was left of the 80s Dole Bludger
generation. Since then, we’ve met the Emos and Slipknot’s Maggots, but in 2009, it’s all set to change.
“It’s the first time any of our fathers have taken any interest in what we do here at the BDO office,” says Big Day Out
promoter, Campbell Smith. “All of a sudden, they’re on the phone asking what time Neil Young is playing and whether the
Warriors will be the support act, and then….”
And then we got a call from a Dad we hadn’t heard from in a long time… a familiar voice came on the line.
“Righto,”said Dad. “What’s this bloody Big Day Out about then?”
For one brief moment, back in the days before the Big Day Out, Dad’s Tips was an institution on BFM. Beaming in from
somewhere that sounded like 1950s Rangitikei, Dad’s brought wisdom to a younger generation through his tips onlife, love
and how to make a coathanger aerial for your Valiant.
Now he’s back on the air with a whole new take on how to do the Big Day Out, Dad-style. You can see his latest tip on
Big Day Out etiquette online at
Big Day Out etiquette and there’s more to come.
And in celebration and acknowledgement of just how great Dad can be, the Big Day Out is joining with Dad of Dads Tips
fame. We want the Dads of the Year 2008 to come to the Big Day Out 2009.
We’re gathering the best Dads of any generation and putting them all in a fancy corporate box at Mount Smart stadium
where they can enjoy Neil Young and all the young people’s action.
Nominations are open to anyone who fits our criteria of Dadness – which, we should add, is entirely subjective and
gender non-specific. Dadness can embrace a myriad of qualities such as generosity, goofiness, goodness, inspiration and
ineptitude, or anything else you can come up with that makes us think you know a great “Dad”.
So if there’s a “Dad” you know who might love to be at the Big Day Out, all you need to do is write to us about them and
send that in an email to dad@crsmanagement.co.nz
We’re offering five double tickets to Dad’s corporate box for the five “Dads of the Year”. They can bring you, mum, one
of the kids, a mate from the RSA or whoever they want, so long as they’re over 18.
Entries close at midnight on 21 December and just like on A Dog’s Show the judge’s decision is final. So get scribbling!
