Radio New Zealand Media Statement re Stand In Presenter Noelle McCarthy
Earlier this week Radio New Zealand investigated Sunday Star Times allegations that the occasional presenter of the
Afternoons programme on Radio New Zealand National, Noelle McCarthy, had failed to adequately attribute sources for
three essay items broadcast on the programme during a period from June to October this year.
Noelle McCarthy agreed that failure to attribute the sources was a breach of Radio New Zealand Editorial Policies and
issued an apology.
Radio New Zealand has continued its investigation and has now concluded a detailed review of essay material broadcast
during the 46 occasions that Noelle McCarthy has presented Afternoons during 2008.
Radio New Zealand has identified a very small number of other instances, in addition to those examples published by the
Sunday Star Times, which Noelle McCarthy agrees were not adequately attributed. These further examples have been
discussed with her.
Radio New Zealand has the most public and transparent editorial policies and operational processes of any broadcaster in
New Zealand. All staff are required to be aware of the policies and abide by them.
Noelle McCarthy will continue to prepare for her Summer Noelle programme scheduled for broadcast from Boxing Day but
will not present Afternoons for the rest of the year.
